THE CHALLENGE:

$24.36 - Hourly wage needed to afford the basics for a single parent with 2 preschool-aged children in Livingston County; minimum wage is $7.40.
9.9% - Livingston County unemployment rate (7/11)
9,630 - Livingston County individuals exhausting their unemployment benefits (3/11-6/12)--with job recovery at an all-time low in Livingston County
12% - of Livingston County residents are unemployed and/or require government assistance
24% - of all public school children are eligible for the free and reduced lunch program in Livingston County.
40% - of all calls received by the 2-1-1 Regional Call Center are requests for basic needs services (food, rent and utility assistance, shelter, the 'basics')
30.5% - increase in individuals requiring food assistance in the past year- the 3rd largest increase in the state.

THE GOOD NEWS:

Last year Livingston County United Way's donors' gifts were distributed as:

40% towards Basic Need Programs
46% towards Family and Children Services
14% towards Community Wellness and Connecting People to Services

As local families continue to struggle with tough economic challenges, we're addressing the issues head on. Through partnerships:

We've reduced the county's Hunger Gap to less than 20% - vs. 50+% two years ago - and provided 3.8 million additional meals to local families last year
Served over 6,500 Summer Lunch Bunch meals
Distributed over 3,500 Community Resource Guides - focusing on the 'newly poor' population's needs
Over 900 people received services at the January 2011 Community Connect event
Distributed personal care items to over 2,000 families
Filled the gap with emergency shelter funds for homeless families at Christmas
Had over 1,000 volunteer shifts filled at this year's Day of Caring. Based on IRS guidelines, the total investment in volunteer hours in the community through the Day of Caring was $85,440!
