Why United Way & Tax Filing?

United Way launched MyFreeTaxes in 2009 to help struggling working families keep more of their hard-earned money, and achieve greater financial stability.

The cost of housing, health care, child care, gas, and other basics is far surpassing income for many American families, even working multiple jobs. In Livingston County, 20% of working households can be described as “ALICE” (Asset-Limited, Income-Constrained, Employed). These neighbors are often earning too much to qualify for government assistance, but not enough to thrive in today’s high-cost economy. Oftentimes, there is no money left to save for buying a home, continuing education, or retiring. Just one unanticipated expense – a car breakdown, an uninsured illness, a week without a paycheck – can lead to crisis. Tax credits and refunds can be critical supplemental income for low-to-moderate income households.

To address the obstacles that prevent families from getting ahead financially, United Way launched a national financial stability initiative that promotes community-change strategies to help families plan for, and accomplish their long-term financial goals. My Free Taxes is one component of that strategy.

Last year, Livingston County residents captured over $163,000 in tax refunds and credits by using the United Way’s MyFreeTaxes.com self-prepared online tax service. “This service lets people keep more of their money, supports financial stability for local families, and puts more money back into local communities.” explained Donna Gehringer, Livingston County United Way Community Investments Director. The filing service provides detailed information to help those who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit.
