FEMA Grant Funds Available
Livingston County has been awarded Federal funds under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program. Livingston County has been chosen to receive $118,910 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county. The selection was made by a National Board that is chaired by the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The Local Board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country. A Local Board will determine how the funds awarded to Livingston County are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service organizations in the area. The Local Board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds.

3-on-3 Basketball Tournament
Howell, Michigan - The Howell High School Marketing II Class will be hosting a 3-on-3 basketball tournament on Saturday, April 19,2008, with proceeds from the event being donated the the Livingston County United Way.

2008 Community Resource Fair
The 7th Annual Community Resource Fair is scheduled for Friday, April 4, from 4-9 p.m. The event, hosted by the Livingston County Dept. of Human Services, the Livingston County United Way and Citizens Insurance, will be held in the Parker High School Cafeteria in Howell, in conjunction with the Livingston County Home Show. The Community Resource Fair showcases area services and resources available for Livingston County residents. Non-profit 501(c)3 health and human service providers and other community service providers interested in exhibiting need to respond soon as there are a limited number of exhibit spaces available. It is anticipated that hundreds of programs will be featured with nearly 60 organizations participating.

United Way Announces Annual Meeting
The Livingston County United Way’s 2008 Annual Meeting & Volunteer Recognition Breakfast is scheduled for Thursday, February 7th, beginning at 7:30 a.m., at Crystal Gardens Banquet Center in Howell. The Annual Meeting provides the forum for business action items to take place such as election of the Board of Directors and a celebration of the past year’s accomplishments. Becky Best, Community Relations Manager for Citizens Insurance and the current President of the Livingston County United Way, will share some of the successes of the past year and provide an overview of the organization’s direction going into 2008. Best will officially turn the gavel over to Piet Lindhout of Lindhout Associates Architects as the incoming United Way President.

Personal Care Item Drop-Off Announced
Responding to the evident and increasing need for personal care items for clients of its partner agencies, the Livingston County United Way has announced its intention to serve as a drop off location for anyone wanting to donate personal care items. A personal care item drive was held in August as a part of the Livingston County United Way’s 6th annual Day of Caring. Twelve cases of personal care items were collected during the drive and distributed to numerous agencies who deal first-hand with those unable to purchase such items. “The Day of Caring drive really brought to light how important this often overlooked need is in our community,” stated Nancy Rosso, Executive Director of the Livingston County United Way. “People really responded by going through cupboards and closets, and sharing extra supplies they had on hand.

Holiday Wishes Booklets Available
The 14th annual Livingston County United Way's Holiday Wishes Booklet is now available. The booklet is a compilation of "wishes" from twenty-three area non-profit organization. Area businesses, youth organizations, churches and others are encouraged to consider "adopting" one or more of the agencies listed in the booklet for holiday or year-end giving.

Food Grant Request Approved
Following their commitment to provide additional support for the area’s critical basic need programs, the Livingston County United Way board of directors recently approved grant funds for Gleaners Community Food Bank. The $5,000 grant is being used to offset deficit food contributions and to help “fill the gap” to meet rising community needs. Currently, the pantry has served over 3,000 households year to date—a 30% increase over last year. Over twenty percent of those visiting the pantry this year have been “first timers” in utilizing food pantry services.

On-Line Pledging Now Available
Area residents and businesses can now take advantage of the Livingston County United Way’s new easy-to-use on-line donation process. Credit card gifts can be given through the United Way’s website, www.lcunitedway.org, and are tax deductible as allowed by law. “Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for our donors at any time of the day. With today’s technology, people can easily make their charitable contribution with just a couple of clicks on their computer whenever it works best for their schedule. The Livingston County United Way supports 50 programs and initiatives to address the area’s most critical needs, and has 32 partner agencies. The Board of Directors of the Livingston County United Way has committed funding and the organization’s resources to support quality programs that address: 1) meeting basic needs; 2) preparing every child to succeed in school and in life; 3) strengthening families, and 4) healthy aging.

National Recertification Attained
Nancy Rosso, Executive Director, announced that the Livingston County United Way has successfully completed all of the United Way of America membership requirements satisfactorily and on time for 2007. The requirements include: MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS CERTIFICATION, MEMBERSHIP INVESTMENT, and DATABASE 2 SURVEY OF TOTAL RESOURCES GENERATED (a survey that captures the full extent of a community’s resource development efforts during the year). “The membership standards must be certified annually in order for us to remain a member of the United Way system,” stated Rosso. “It is important for us to maintain a high standard of accountability and this is part of the process to document that our operations are transparent and meet or exceed United Way membership criteria requirements.”

Livingston Community Receives $10,000 to Invest in Volunteers
The Livingston County United Way has received $10,000 from the Volunteer Investment Grants (VIG) Start-Up Program. Volunteer Investment Grant dollars are distributed through the Michigan Community Service Commission and the Volunteer Centers of Michigan. This $10,000 is an initial planning allocation of a multi-year commitment.

2-1-1 A REALITY IN LIVINGSTON COUNTY
The long-awaited official launch of 2-1-1 for Livingston County took place on Wednesday, November 1st at the Livingston County Board of Commissioners Chambers with approximately 75 people in attendance. The arrival of 2-1-1 will give area residents the ability to dial 2-1-1 to receive health and human service referrals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by simply dialing the 3-digit number.
